are you kidding me?!!! this is the most ridiculous fear tactic baloney i have seen in years. come up with a REAL argument why we should let kids go sans insurance, why bush should kick representative democracy to the curb, and how it is possible that the "worst president in modern history" is the only one right on SCHIP and we can talk. but this is just silly.

Konkle, do you know anything about the legislation? read about the funding plan for the expansion. It relies on a tobacco tax increase. So if the idea is to get people to quit smoking (which I think is a good thing)by increasing the taxes on tobacoo, as people quit, the revenue for your precious expansion dries up. This proposed expansion relies on the smokers of America doing their part. That is the truth, I ain't kidding.

what is wrong with increasing the tobacco tax? increasing the tax may actually encourage people to stop smoking? and if all the smoking americans quit smoking, i am sure we can figure out a different way to fund SCHIP.

as a public health official, clearly i am all for an end to smoking. and our work has cut smoking rates, but i don't see how these two things are really at odds with each other.

i don't really like protecting tobacco companies at the plight of poor children.
